North Vancouver Waterfront To Get New Art Gallery
“We’d like to be a little bit further along, but so far we’re on time and we’re pretty thrilled with the design,” said gallery director and curator Reid Shier, who was scheduled to present a plan for the new facility to North Vancouver City council on Monday night. “It’s beautiful. They’ve done a really fantastic job.
“But we still have a little process to do, so it hasn’t been totally green-lighted yet.”
Shier said Presentation House will have to raise $11.5 million of the new building’s estimated $15-million construction cost.
He said the City of North Vancouver has committed another $2.5 million, along with the land, but the gallery will be asking for another $1 million from the city.
“The City of North Vancouver has requested a little retail (space), so negotiations over the capital cost of that will be ironed out.”
Shier is hoping the provincial and federal governments will also chip in.
The proposed new two-storey gallery building will be 22,632 square feet, located on city-owned land at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue.
It will include exhibition space of 4,000 square feet on the second floor, with a 16-foot ceilings, sky-lit with natural light. Adjacent to the main space will be another 2,224 square feet that can function as exhibition space, or be used for banquets or rentals. The building is planned to include a gallery retail shop and café.
The facility is being designed by Patkau Architects, and is intended to serve as a community gathering spot. It will include space for classes and lectures.
The new gallery will give Presentation House a chance to build on its reputation for producing innovative exhibitions and programs, as well as serve as a catalyst for the Central Waterfront district.
The gallery is now housed in a former school that was opened as the Presentation House Cultural Centre in 1976 by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.Cited: Zeveloff, Julie. "The Otherworldly Architecture Of Zaha Hadid." Business Insider. Business Insider, Inc, 15 July 2013. Web. 16 Feb. 2014.
